BIO

Mmakgosi Kgabi is a trained physical theatre and improvisation performer and also a performance facilitator. She trained with Causing a Scene(JHB), Performance of a Lifetime(POAL-NYC), and Clowns Without Borders South Africa(CWBSA). She studied Theatre at Rhodes University with Choreography, Dance Repetoire and Acting as her majors. She has developed her skills in the Industry, both in South Africa and Internationally as an on Screen Actor and a Stage Actor.

 

Kgabi also excels in organisation skills and has worked as Production Co-ordiantor, Stage Manager and Directors assistant for Mann Media Company, Well Worn Theatre.

 

In 2016 she did a Hospitanz as Regieassistentin with Maxim Gorki Theatre (Berlin) for Marina Salzmann's Meteoriten. 

 

In 2015 was the USA Premiere of her work 'Shades of a Queen' at the Queer New York International Arts Festival – Abrons Centre. 

 

In 2014 she was an Artist in Residence for ‘On Fire’ Berlin, Germany: performance and  conversations around Gender, Tradition, Homosexuality and Identity.

 

In 2013 she was a dance teaching artist for ArtsInsideOut (NYC), doing outreach work in SA with teenagers/mothers and caregivers affected and infected by HIV/AIDS. 

 

Her work often interrogates the premise of identity and nationalism ,revisiting themes on the Black Female Body Politics and Migration. She is a firm believer in the power of performance to build a better world.
